Local shopping coupons, as part of the Japanese government’s domestic recovery campaigns, will be distributed after Oct.1

Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has decided to begin distributing local shopping coupons, as part of the Japanese government’s domestic travel recovery campaign ‘Go To Travel,’ on October 1 2020. A coupon is equivalent to discount of 15% on the total travel price for shopping in a local destination and neighbor prefectures. Including discount of 35% on the total travel price a user benefits with half price in traveling.

Registration of local coupon providers, who must keep authorized hygiene guidelines, has already started since September 8. After completing registration, they will receive a set of coupon tools.

The upper limit of a coupon is 6,000 JPY a traveler (3,000 JPY for a day trip). In case of 40,000 JPY a night a traveler, 14,000 JPY, equivalent to 35% on the total travel price, can be discounted, and a coupon of 6,000 JPY, equivalent to 15% on the total travel price, is distributed for shopping.

Local providers can deal with both paper and electric coupons or either way. The coupons can be used for shopping in an in-house souvenir shop or restaurant of a ‘Go To Travel’ registration accommodation, but it must be dealt as separation from the travel price.
