Overcrowding in Arashiyama, Kyoto is visualized based on Wi-Fi access data for more comfortable sightseeing

Kyoto City Tourism Association, together with Kinki District Transport Bureau, will launch a demonstration project to decentralize tourists in overcrowded Arashiyama area in Kyoto City. By using Wi-Fi access data on mobile phones of tourists, overcrowded situation or sometimes called overtourism  in a particular place on a particular day is visualized and forecasted on the Association’s website.

The demonstration project will run from November 10 to December 17 this year. The Association will propose more comfortable sightseeing routes to tourists, based on the collected data, on the website in Japanese and in English. Also, comfortable times to travel can be found on the website with selection of a visiting day and a place.
