The duty-free rules in Japan for international visitors are extended to 5,000 JPY or less for general goods

Japan Tourism Agency announced that the duty-free rules will be extended to 5,000 JPY or more from more than 10,000 JPY for general goods and to 5,000 JPY or more from more than 5,000 JPY for consumable supplies on May 1 2016. The new rule is mainly based on the government’s initiative to extend the duty-free rule for international visitors who visit local regions under the amendment of the tax system announced in December 2015.

In addition to the reduction of minimum purchased amounts for duty-free, the procedure for delivery of purchased goods from duty-free shops to home or an airport will be simplified, and all of goods purchased at several shops in a shopping center can be combined at a designated duty-free counter.

To reduce workload on duty-free shops, ‘consumer commitment form’ written by a buyer can be preserved or issued digitally, not on a paper.
