Travel-related online shopping by Japanese households in July 2022 increased by 2.4 times year on year

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications’ report on household spending in July 2022 finds that travel-related online shopping contributed to a large increase in total spending.

Online shopping spending a household was up 20.4% year on year to 21,940 JPY a month, though the ratio of online shopping households was just up 1.2% to 53%. The pandemic seems to be a trigger for an increase in online shoppings. 

In detail, travel-related spending was up 2.4 times to 3,595 JYP a household, and the nominal contribution rate to the total was up 11.3%. The most-spent item was foods at 4,623 JPY a household.
