Year-on-year comparison of visitors to Japan from four Southeast Asian markets in September 2016

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)’s statistics in September 2016 finds that Japan received 44,700 visitors from Thailand (+30.0%), 21,900 from Singapore (+17.0%), 25,900 from Malaysia (+21.6%) and 17,800 from Indonesia (+38.5%). All of the monthly results were record-high for September.

The table below shows changes of visitors from the four markets in the last 12 months:

JNTO analyzed that the lower growth rate of visitors from Thailand resulted from extension of air network including Thai LCCs like Scoot and Thai Air Asia X and effective advertising campaigns. In Singapore, a sequence of holidays and a variety of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic partnership between Japan and Singapore particularly contributed to the growth. Malaysia and Indonesia were also boosted by sequences of holidays.
