Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan in January 2026 was down 4.9% year on year to 3,597,500, declining for the first time in four years since January 2022.
Arrivals from China considerably reduced by 60.7% to 385,300, and those from Hong Kong was down 17.9% to 200,000 due to decrease in Chinese airlines’ flights to Japan influenced by the diplomatic challenge between Japan and China, while those from other top five source markets continued growing: 1,176,000 from South Korea (up 21.6%), 694,500 from Taiwan (up 17.0%) and 207,800 from U.S. (up 13.8%).
JNTO explained that some Asian source markets were affected from shift of Lunar New Year holidays from late January last year to mid February this year.
In addition to Taiwan, arrivals from Australia were up 14.6% to record-high 167,000 on a single month basis, and 17 source markets, including U.S. Indonesia and Philippines, saw record-breaking arrivals for January.
