International arrivals in Narita Airport in August 2023 recovered to the same level of 2019, while Japanese passengers were still less than half

Passengers using Narita International Airport were up 91% year on year to 3.21 million in August 2023, the first over 3 million a month since January 2020. Compared to August 2019, the result was still down 24%. 

International flight passengers totaled 2.41 million, 155% more than a year ago or 29% fewer than August in 2019. Foreign passengers on international flights were up 519% year on year to 1,39 million, which were 95% of the result in August 2019. 

Japanese passengers on International flights were up 126% year on year to 770,000, but the result was still down 53% compared to August 2019. 

Departures and arrivals of international passenger flights were up 78% year on year to 11,389, but the result was 30% fewer than four years ago. 

Domestic flight passengers were up 9% year on year to 797,000 (up 2% over 2019), which were record-high for a single month.
