International conferences in Japan drastically reduced by 99% to were 29 only in 2021 compared to pre-pandemic

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international conferences in Japan through 2021 reduced by 86.9% year on year or 99.2% over 2019 to 29 only. The number of participants was down 42.6% year on year or 97.2% over 2019 to 55,221, out of which foreigners were just 750. 

The global pandemic had obviously restricted cross-border movements for a long time, and at the same time online conferences had increased through the year. JNTO revealed that 911 remotely-organized international conferences were reported.
