International visitors to Japan spent 2.5 trillion yen in total for three months from April 2025, 18% more than a year ago

Japan Tourism Agency announced that the total amount of tourism spending in Japan by international visitors for three months from April 2025 increased by18.0% to 2.53 trillion yen year on year.

By market, the top was China with 516 billion yen (20.4% of the total), followed by U.S. with 357 billion yen (14.1%), Taiwan with 292 billion yen (11.5%), South Korea with 231 billion yen (9.2%), and Hong Kong with 136 billion yen (5.4%).

An international visitor spent 238,693 yen on average, 0.1% less than a year ago. By market, the most spending was seen in U.K. with 443,945 yen per visitor, followed by Italy with 397,911 yen per visitor and Germany with 396,160 yen per visitor. The highest growth was seen in Vietnam with 36.7% up.

A Chinese visitor spent 248,481 yen on average, 12.5% less than a year ago.

By category, the top share was 38.5% for accommodation (971 billion yen), followed by 26.2% for shopping (662 billion yen) and 21% for eating and drinking (531 billion yen). Compared to a year ago, the share of shopping dropped.

For the first three months of 2025, spending by international visitors totaled 2.3 trillion yen.
