Japan Tourism Agency selects 20 pioneer model areas for prevention of over-tourism

Japan Tourism Agency has selected 20 pioneer model areas and 51 general areas for prevention of over-tourism as the first public invitation in the national policy package to prevent and refrain from over-tourism. The agency is providing the selected areas with comprehensive supports to their efforts including establishment of a discussion opportunity with local residents and stakeholders.

20 pioneer model areas include ‘Niseko Model for usage of taxi’ in Kutchan, Hokkaido, ‘Equalization of crowd and ease of traffic jam’ in Hakone, Kanagawa, ‘ Sustainable tourism in harmony with local life’ in Kyoto City or ‘Nature experience in the restricted areas’ in Iriomote, Okinawa.
