Japanese outbound travelers in May 2023 still remained half of 2019, despite a 70% recovery of international flights from Japan

Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of Japanese overseas travelers were 675,700 in May 2023, approximately 110,000 more travelers than the previous month. The result still remained half of May 2019 (1,437,929 travelers), but the reduction rate had been small since January 2023.

According to OAG, international flights departing from six major airports in Japan (Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo) were down 32.5% to 14,941, compared to May 2019, and available seats down 30.5% to 3.5 million. Among six major airports, only Haneda handed more flights than in May 2019.
