Japanese overseas travelers are expected to increase by 4.9% to 17 million in 2016 - JTB Research & Consulting

The JTB Tourism Research & Consulting's survey finds that Japanese overseas travelers in 2016 is expected to increase by 4.9% year on year to 17 million, which is based on the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)'s statistics of 9.34 million travelers for the first seven months of 2016, booking trend in this summer and pre-bookings in the rest of 2016.

According to the questionnaire results, the average frequency of overseas travel in 2015 was 1.59 per traveler. The above-average results were found in 60 years old or older females (1.75), 60 years old or older males (1.66), 20's females (1.65) and 20's males (1.71).

The most negative reasons for overseas travel in 2016 was because of no long holidays enough for overseas travel with a share of 35.3%), followed by because of more interested in travel in Japan (19%) and because of anxiety about safe travel in overseas destinations (18%).

About holiday acquisition, people in other regions than Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya tended to take holidays irregularly, not according to calendar, and the ratio of people who could take five holidays in a row a year was lower. The ratio of answers that you could not take long holidays was 10.3% in other areas than Tokyo, which almost doubled 5.1% in Tokyo.

The survey was conduced in the period from May 16 to 20 2016 for 15 to 79 years old 3,399 males and females who experienced overseas travels after April 1 2014.
