Spending in Japan by international visitors increased by 11% to 2.1 trillion yen for the Q3 of 2025

Japan Tourism Agency announced that spending by international visitors for the third quarter of 2025 (July to September) increased by 11.1% year on year to 2.1 trillion yen.

By nationality and region, China topped the list with 590 billion yen (27.7% of total), followed by Taiwan with 302 billion yen (14.2%), the United States with 221.5 billion yen (10.4%), South Korea with 207 billion yen (9.7%) and Hong Kong with 114 billion yen (5.3%).

Spending per person was estimated at 219,000 yen, 0.2% less than a year ago. By nationality, the top was Germany at 435,512 yen per person, followed by U.K. at 360,054 yen per person and Spain at 354,793 yen per person. 

The most-spent category was accommodation at 779.7 billion yen (36.6% of total), followed by shopping at 542.7 billion yen (225.5%) and eating and drinking at 488.4 billion yen (22.9%).

The survey also found that a cruise travelers spent 30,336 yen a night, out of which spending for shopping was 27,745 yen.
