Domestic travel consumption in Japan in 2018 resulted in YOY reduction for the first time in the past four years

Japan Tourism Agency reported that domestic travel consumption by Japanese people in 2018 reduced by 3% year on year to 20.5 trillion JPY in total, which consisted of 15.8 trillion JPY for overnight travels (-1.7%) and 4.7 trillion JPY for day trips (-7%). The market saw a year-on-year reduction for the first time in the past four years.

The number of Japanese domestic travelers was down 13.2% to 561.8 million in 2018, comprising 291 million overnight travelers (-10%) and 271 million day trippers (-16.5%). Expenses a travel a traveler, however, were up 11.8% to 36,462 JPY\; 54,300 JPY an overnight travel and 17,285 JPY a day trip. Each of the results was the highest in the past eight years.
