International visitor spending in Japan amounted to 2.3 trillion yen for the first three months of 2026

Japan Tourism Agency announced that spending by international visitors for the first three months of 2026 increased by 2.5% year on year to 2.3 trillion yen.

By nationality and region, Taiwan topped the list with 388.4 billion yen (16.6% of total), followed by South Korea with 318.2 billion yen (13.6%), China with 271.5 billion yen (11.6%), U.S. with 259.2 billion yen (11.1%) and Hong Kong with 148.2 billion yen (6.3%).

Spending by Chinese visitors was down 50.4% year on year, while growths were seen in Taiwan at 22.5%, South Korea at 12.7% and U.S. at 16.6%.

The most-spent category was accommodation at 857.1 billion yen (36.7% of total), followed by shopping at 589.5 billion yen (25.2%) and eating and drinking at 535.1 billion yen (22.9%). Compared to a year earlier, the ratio of shopping dropped from 29.4% to 25.2%.

Spending per person was estimated at 221,000 yen, 0.6% less than a year earlier. By nationality, the top was France at 407,759 yen per person, followed by Australia at 404,298 yen per person, U.K. at 398,733 yen per person, Germany at 398,753 yen and Spain at 397,238 yen. 

The ranking was reflected from length of stays in Japan. While the average stay nights were 10.3 nights as a whole, those were 24.4 nights by French visitors, 20.8 nights by Spanish visitors and 14.5 nights by Australian visitors.
