Japanese guest nights in June 2022 were recovered to a 7% reduction compared to June 2019

Japan Tourism Agency reported that the total number of Japanese guest nights in June 2022 (provisionally) was up 72.2% year on year to 33.9 million, which were 6.5% fewer guests nights than the same month in 2019. International guest nights were up 168.4% over 2021 or down 93.1% over 2019 to 660,000. The total was up 73.4% over 2021 or down 24.7% over 2019 to 34.5 million.

The occupancy rate was 44.2% overall, 16.4 lower points than 2019. By type of accommodation, the rates were 32.2% for ryokans, 41.3% for resort hotels, 54.8% for budget hotels and 50.6% for city hotel. The occupancy rate of ryokans recovered well to a 4.5 points reduction compared to May 2019, probably boosted by the domestic travel campaign by prefecture.

In May 2022 (definitely), top three prefectures were Tokyo with 4.3 million guest nights (down 35.1% over 2019), Osaka with 2.4 million guest nights (down 39.5% over 2019) and Hokkaido with 2.3 million guest nights (down 24% over 2019).
