Qantas Airways is driving tourism promotion in Japan in earnest with restart of Haneda-Sydney services

Qantas Airways resumed three flights a week between Haneda and Sydney with A330-300 (28 business class seats and 260 economy class seats) on September 13, followed by launch of three Haneda-Brisbane flights a week with the same aircraft on December 1 2022, though Haneda-Melbourne services will still be suspended.

Masashi Ogino, Qantas Airways Regional General Manager Japan, said at a seminar for travel partners that the airline is trying to revitalize tourist demand for Australia as a member of tourism players.

Qantas Airways said that Japanese travelers are able to connect to domestic flights from Sydney and Brisbane to other major destinations in Australia, as the domestic flight network has already restored to the pre-pandemic level. Although the airline dose not announce restart of Kansai-Sydney and Sapporo-Sydney services, it expects to carry Japanese travelers from a lot of cities in Japan to Australia via Haneda in connection with domestic flights by oneworld partner JAL and Jetstar Japan.

It is true that rise in prices in Japan, weaker yen and higher fuel surcharges have discouraged Japanese travelers to go abroad for leisure, but Ogino said, “Qantas shows the total airfares including fuel surcharges to consumers according to the rule by fair trade commission of Australia. It may be a psychological advantage for Japanese travelers in planning a travel to Australia.”

He also emphasized that SDGs-related efforts in Australia, such as coral preservation or diversity & inclusion, will be a good tourism contents for school trips particularly.
