An international visitor to Osaka Kansai EXPO spent 390,000 yen on average during staying in Japan, much more than 210,000 yen as a whole

Mastercard, Mitsubishi Research Institute, Kansai Tourism Bureau analyzed consumption activities by international visitors during Osaka Kansai EXPO 2025 from April to October 2025. 

Approximately 21.5 million foreign tourists visited Japan during the period, totaling 4.6 trillion yen nationwide, up 14% (an increase of 579.7 billion yen) from the same period last year. Of this, 608.5 billion yen were spent by approximately 1.56 million Expo visitors.

The 1.56 million Expo visitors spent 270.3 billion yen in the Kansai region, and more than half of the total (608.5 billion yen) was spent outside of Kansai.

Spending by high-value-added tourists (travelers with per capita spending of 1 million yen or more in Japan) also increased. While national spending increased 13% to 890.2 billion yen, spending in Kansai grew at an even faster rate, increasing 30% to 173.5 billion yen.

Spending in Osaka City varied depending on the train line

Spending by foreign visitors in Osaka city during the event increased by 28% to 503.7 billion yen. Of this, spending in the central area (Kita Ward, Chuo Ward, Naniwa Ward) increased by 408.3 billion yen (a 22% increase), and spending in the Expo site and the surrounding bay area (Konohana Ward, Minato Ward, Taisho Ward, Suminoe Ward) increased by 45.1 billion yen (a 42% increase).

Spending along the Osaka Metro Chuo Line significantly increased by 65% to to 63.7 billion yen. Meanwhile, spending along the JR South Line (Loop Line, Southbound) increased by16% to 23.3 billion yen, lower than the 28% increase for Osaka City as a whole, and spending along the JR North Line (Loop Line, Northbound) decreased by 5% to 92.5 billion yen, demonstrating disparities in the ripple effects of the Expo.
