
Michelin Guide unveiled Michelin Key 2025, selected from Michelin Guide Hotel Selection on the booking platform based on five criteria of local experience, architecture and interior design, service quality and comfort, value for money and originality. The number of listed accommodations in Japan increased from 243 last year to 340 this year.
Out of the listed 340 accommodations, 128 were selected as Michelin Keys. 3 Michelin keys go to ‘Asaba’ in Shizuoka for the firs time (promoted from 2 key) in addition to ‘Gora Kadan,’ ‘Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto,’ ‘Amanemu, ‘Palace Hotel Tokyo,’ ‘Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi’ and ‘Bvlgari Hotel Tokyo' that were selected last year.
20 hotels and ryokans, including ‘Rosewood Miyakojima’ in Okinawa and ‘Onyado Chikurintei’ in Saga as the first awards, were selected as 2 Michelin keys, and 101 hotels and ryokans selected as 1 Michelin keys.
‘Benesse House” in Kagawa was nominated as Michelin Architecture & Design Award,’ which was one of four new categories, though it missed the winner.
Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guides, said of Japan that accommodations in Japan, which serve authentic experiences and Omotenashi (Japanese hospitality) cultures, play roles to attract international travelers to Japan. According to the Michelin Guides, Japan is the forth destination in the world in terms of traffics on the booking platform.
